Pinch of emotion, little pain, genuine sadness… Ohhhh! :( The story about distance and time, and holding on and letting go. I just want to release my emotion after watching this film. Honestly, at first, it seem very boring because of the setting and the type of melody used but what kept me watching was the journey of the two main characters (Takaki Tōno and Akari Shinohara), their conflict, and their desire of seeing each other.

Takaki and Akari — are like some other childhood couples in such ways. With similar interests, they were both compatible with each other and there was a time that even their classmates teased them because of their closeness. But they are not meant to grow together because Akari needs to transfer to another school because of her parents’ job and eventually, Takaki with his family move to another house. Somehow, these two keep writing letters to each other just to keep in touch. Technology that time was not yet good, no emails or texts so I can really feel the sympathy. Yah! It is so hard to keep in touch with your loved ones if there’s no convenient way of communicating with them! By the way, the scenes where they are exchanging letters keep me alive and desperate for the idea of seeing them together again. But that idea, that hope is slowly vanishing.

Mainly, there are 3 main acts of the story. First is their childhood, second is Takaki’s life without Akari and, third, the most painful part, is living in separate ways. How did it happen? Obviously, the reality of the result of lack of communication.

5 Centimeters Per Second is the span when a petal of the cherry blossom falls, and it is like a metaphor of how people met and slowly separating of ways. It’s like that you’ve just met once just to give a temporary feeling of happiness and satisfaction but eventually, it fades until you’ve totally forgotten it and it just give some sort of emptiness in your life but you just don’t know how to explain and cope with it. Time and acceptance are the keys so that one can continue living in the reality.

I really feel that they love each other but in reality, they are not meant to be. Reality really hurts but it is just what makes us human. To deal with sadness and to find happiness, to continue living in the real world and making the best out of that reality. :)
